Big onion

Onion (Allium cepa) is a herbaceous biennial plant of the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae) grown for  its edible bulb. The onion is likely native to southwestern Asia but is now grown throughout the  world, chiefly in the temperate zones. Onions are low in nutrients but are valued for their flavour  and are used widely in cooking. They add flavour to dishes like stews, roasts, soups, and  salads and are also served as a cooked and raw vegetable.

Onions are very hardy and can survive in a wide range of growing conditions. The bulbs  vary in size, shape, colour, and pungency, though warmer climates generally produce  onions with a milder, sweeter flavour.  The onion’s characteristic pungency results from the sulfur-rich volatile oil it contains; the  release of this oil during peeling or chopping brings tears to the eyes

More information:

– Expertly packed and delivered within 5-7 days from day of ordering.
– Comes with a cute postcard with sowing and care instructions.

How to sow:

– Onion plants are heavy feeders and require constant nourishment to produce big bulbs. So, at  planting time, add nitrogen fertilizer.
– Bury onion sets 2 to 6 inches apart, gently pressing them into loose soil no more than 1  inch deep. (Use the closer spacing if you want to pull immature onions as scallions.) ∙
– Fertilize every few weeks with nitrogen to get big bulbs. Stop fertilizing when the onions  push the soil away and the bulbing process has started. Do not put the soil back around the  onions; the bulb needs to emerge above the soil.
